Boat ride along the canals of Brugge
It is easy to love Brugge.
The town is shadowed in mediaeval times; filled with gothic and baroque monuments, picturesque cobbled lanes, tiny bridges and canals at every turn, the waters either still, or rippling in waves, as one glides by in a boat with other tourists, a tour guide at the helm, announcing loudly where they are and histories of particular stops of particular places.
It is easy to love Brugge because of its market squares lined with soaring towers, historic churches and old whitewashed almshouses. It’s easy to love this quaint town in the northwest of Belgium, because of its’ charming cafes and old-fashioned horse drawn carriages from where one can overlook the town or otherwise fill themselves with every kind, colour, taste or shape of chocolate imaginable.

It is also easy to love Brugge because of the music at the city centre, very loud and soft at the same time, classical sounds of Mozart, Bach and other composers…the sort of music that should be accompanied by a bride marching down the aisle with guests nodding and smiling in approval.
It is easy to like this town that bustles and bursts at the seams with tourists everywhere, map in hand, eyes behind shaded glasses, laughing or drinking and eating while they bask in its’ ambience.
For a time warp back to Mediaeval Brugge, you can step into The Historium and experience those times interactively.

This Valentine’s Day, if you are in Europe and can’t make it to Paris or Venice, know that Brugge just may be waiting for you and your loved one to experience a Mediaeval romance.
NB: The boat ride does not run in the month of February.

I really like Brugges too. I know that travellers find it boring, but it isn’t in the least. The market, the mussels, the beer, the historical seating. What is there not to like?

Brugge is a must visit for anyone coming to Europe, its very close to Brussels and so easy to explore due to its size, quite friendly people and all these amazing chocolates! I do hope you can come soon! Will be happy to show you around.

As an inhabitant of the ‘rivalling’ city of Gent, I used to not like Brugge because I found it boring. But now I just love its charm. Looking at it through a travellers eye (vs that of a local) makes a lot more appealing and interesting. Thanks for sharing this beautiful description of Brugge!

I get where you’re coming from..I have passed through gent and I think it’s just as enchanting! The first time I visited Brugge, I was absolutely floored!! I had visited brussels many times and found it quite busy but the minute I stepped into Brugge, it was like everything I’d imagined it to be and more..thanks for reading! 🙂
