If you happen to be in Rijeka for 24 hours like we did, waiting to take a flight, there are a few things you can do.
If it’s blazing hot like it was during the summer, you will run off to the tiny beach and enjoy a swim. I found the beach at Rijeka much more quiet and private than that at Verudela in Pula, but just as charming. I liked the ‘people feel’ at Verudela where there were lots of eating places, a shop to buy touristy stuff, souvenirs and floaters, and the presence of huge 5-star hotels nearby where we would walk in and have access to the wifi.
Rijeka on the other hand, is a transportation hub and port city with refineries and heavy industries, and barely promotes itself as a tourist destination. Rijeka is best known for it’s annual Carnival, which is the largest carnival in Croatia. With a day spent at the city centre, you will enjoy the presence of the huge church adjacent to the lovely port and the Trsat castle, a little far off.
Don’t get too late because the bus times you will be given at the bus terminal there don’t synchronize with the actual time the bus arrives. We were urged to tour Rijeka a little bit as the bus arrived ‘every hour.’ Our trans bus arrived two hours later than the time given to us, and the airport is quite a distance so naturally, we didn’t make check in and had to pay a fine.
I found Rijeka to be a quiet, quaint town with amazing scenery as with the rest of Croatia.

Travelogues of an African Girl 
Hi Africana, I love travelling. However, I find it really expensive. How does one manage to travel on a budget? Accommodation is usually the big issue here.

I agree with you, accomodation is expensive, but there are all sorts of travel tailored as well to your budget..if you are someone who doesn’t mind shared space but loves travel, you should start with dorms in a hostel…the big advantage is that most hostels worldwide have great information on activities one can do in the specific location, on a budget..travel is do-able and worth any investment, so start small in your region then stretch out. Signing up with travel newsletters here in Europe has helped me get great accommodation, 5-star at very low prices..as time goes on, I will do a post on how one can travel at discounted rates.

I have never been to Rijeka. But sounds like an clam and interessting place. I usually like to stop for a longer time (8-24 hours) when waiting for a flight, so that I can see the city we are stopping in. It is like a “free” trip. From Santiago, we stoped in Iquique for 8 hours, and now going to Europe we will have 8 hours in Amsterdam as well. Looking forward to that as well 🙂

Rijeka was interesting..we spent some time at the beach and castle. I loved the views! Cool that you have an Amsterdam stop over for eight hours. You can get from Schipol to Ansterdam City Centre and have some tours during that time, it’s an interesting city and a number of sights are within walking distance to each other..happy travels!
