How to make the most of an African safari

Heading out an African safari is something many people dream of doing before it’s too late, and I’ve loved every chance I’ve been given to explore what is essentially my own backyard. The moment I step into any country, I feel the heat and excitement rush through me as I can’t wait to explore everything there is to offer. However, an African safari is unlike no other trip in the world. For the first time, you can be left standing in the open utterly vulnerable to the world around you, yet completely ready for whatever comes your way. So here’s how to make the most out of an African safari without having to miss a moment.

1.Picture a story

Sure, each new adventures means another chance to explore the world, but it’s an opportunity to learn that every destination has its story. This is just one of the many things traveling can teach you, but an African safari offers a way to learn how to read the pages. What stories have the animals got to tell? Perhaps the locals have tales that are hundreds of years old? I love the intricate details of an area. Going on an African safari isn’t just about spotting pretty animals and taking in the sunshine; there is so much more to the wide open savannahs that is just waiting to be discovered. Now is your time to find out.

2. Get yourself a guide

The best way to make the most of the area is to get yourself a tour guide. There are a number of books out there that can list the endless amount of things you “must see,” but no one knows the land like these tour guides. They are there to give you the best experience possible, so why not take advantage of their knowledge? Deciding what sort of experience you want to take away from your safari is the first step to consider when choosing your tour guide. From there, you can shop around online to see the packages on offer, as well as read reviews or ask friends that have been on tours before to see who they would recommend.

3. Pick your location carefully

An African safari tour isn’t a one size fits all vacation. You might have a list of animals you want to see while out there in the wild, but did you know that not all animals live across the continent? It might be time to think about the ones that are most important to you before booking your destination. Kenya, Rwanda, and Botswana are just some of the locations available to see when choosing your safari, and each comes with their own host of animals and local stories. Plus, there are different experiences to be had in each place, such as walking tours of Jeep safaris. The choice is yours.

4. Buy some binoculars

Binoculars shouldn’t be something you just consider when going on an African safari; they are a necessity if you want to get a closer look at the animals in their wild habitat. Of course, there are many routes to go down when searching for your perfect set, such as whether they are waterproof or can stabilize your image. However, having a pair of binoculars that offer the right magnification and are tough are two of the most important things to look out for when buying yourself a set for your safari. Having a good set of binoculars is easily one of the best ways to make the most of an African safari.

These are just some of the ways you can make the most of an African safari. If you have any other tips and tricks, then be sure to let me know about them in the comments down below!

  1. These are some great tips. I would also add reading many reviews of safari companies to get the most for what you can afford. I enjoyed my safaris in South Africa, Botswana and Tanzania.
